Get to Know Me: Lauren Currie

This week COMMENT is super excited bring you another Get to Know Me feature and to introduce you to the glorious creature that is Lauren Currie of Currie on Cooking...
Lauren is a writer with a passion for food, healthy living and dancing. Her blog is a gorgeous hub where you can find advice on healthy eating and alternative diet as well as a bounty of tried and tested recipes to satisfy your every need. At just 23, we really feel like we can connect with Lauren, her story, and her journey to establishing a healthier lifestyle that works around her and her busy schedule.

COMMENT: What made you decide to begin your blog / channel / business etc. and what does it offer to people?
LAUREN: My blog began as a bit of a hobby as I’ve always been an avid food lover. Growing up, my family would enjoy freshly cooked meals together on an evening and food was at the heart of our home. At uni I wasn’t your typical takeaway orderer, I always cooked but my diet was fairly mundane and consisted of poached eggs and lots of pasta pesto! After uni I began to develop digestive problems and decided to experiment. I took action and cut gluten and refined sugar from my diet which eliminated most of my issues. In fact, it transformed me. I felt amazing, totally rejuvenated. My body changed, my mind changed, I became more active, happier, found a love for dance and I’ve not looked back. At first it was daunting but I stumbled across so many Instagrammers that filled me with inspiration. I discovered more wholesome, unprocessed, nutrient dense foods, creating dishes with more flavours and textures, where vegetables became the stars rather than the sides. I found my blog was a place I could adapt popular favourites to healthier alternatives and share the love with like-minded people so that they could create them in their own kitchens.

C: What is the biggest hurdle you have had to overcome with regard to your blog / channel / business etc. and how did you overcome it?
L: Despite having allergies myself, my partner also suffers from a nut allergy which made raw desserts and gluten free baking even more of a challenge. All my recipes are nut free and I have found that a lot of experimenting, fails, recipe tasting, feedback and determination has improved them. After all, practise makes perfect! I have a few particular favourite desserts such as my raw caramel slices, raw white chocolate hearts and my vanilla and strawberry banana nice cream sundae. Feedback from people is so valuable to me as it feeds me motivation and allows me to improve and progress.

C: What is your Friday afternoon indulgence?
L: I love hummus, because of its versatility. I love it with cinnamon which adds a subtle hint of sweetness to curb any sugar cravings or if I’m feeling more savoury I’ll have it with sundried tomatoes and basil. I also have a slight obsession with tahini. Tahini, banana, medjool dates and bee pollen is just so dreamy!

C: Your idea of a perfect weekend is...
L: My perfect day would start waking from one of those wonderful deep sleeps, full of vivid dreams that leave you feeling a little bewildered. There would be a fresh pina colada smoothie full of fresh pineapple and mint waiting outside under the palm trees. I’d stretch on a white sandy beach whilst listening to the sound of sea, followed by taking a long walk with my dogs and boyfriend, Ben along the cliffs. We’d stop on top of the cliffs where there would be a pole to spin on, looking across clear blue waters. After, we would enjoy beautiful cooked food with grilled fish and fresh salads with our closest friends and family whilst we watch a deep orange and pink sun set. It would end with a massage before falling asleep on a hammock full of feathery pillows and surrounded by fairy lights listening to the sound of nature.

C: Here at COMMENT we love Brunch. Where is your favourite Brunch spot?
L: At brunch I enjoy something more nourishing as I usually enjoy something light early mornings like a POWER packed smoothie. My new favourite brunch spot is 26 grains. They have delicious juices or lemon and cayenne pepper water but what I really love is their hearty bowls of oatmeal. If you visit you must try the egg and kale oats, their banana cacao oats with coconut yogurt, cacao nibs, banana and maple and if you’re looking for something sweeter and lighter their summer berry bowl with summer berries, banana, coconut milk, cardamom, granola, coconut, raspberries and bee pollen is to die for.

C: What 3 things can you not leave home without?
L: My banana, spinach and lucuma smoothie, snacks and a positive attitude. The smile is most important.

C: Who are your idols, mentors, people that make you fan-girl, and why?
L: Bendy Kate – if you haven’t seen her performances you need to get to know! Kate specialises in pole, aerial, hand balancing and acrobatics.

C: What is your top tip for a Monday morning?
L: Organisation is key! On a Sunday I usually set aside a couple of hours to bulk cook lots of delicious lunches, snacks and dinners for the week that I can look forward to. This saves me a lot of time so I can relax and enjoy my Sunday evening with an early night. By doing this, on a Monday morning I usually wake up, already knowing what my ‘to do’ list is for the week and feeling ready to go. I usually start my Monday with a quick HIIT workout to keep me energised as it only takes 15 minutes and it releases lots of happy endorphins. I make my smoothie and hit the road! De-clutter and keep positive

C: What is your morning routine?
L: My morning routine is fairly basic as I don’t have much time. It usually starts with a green smoothie and a 15 minute HIIT session to boost my energy levels or a light stretch if I’m feeling tired.
